Roman English
Chhori janme juwai lai, chhoro janme buhaari lai !
Literal English Translation
Daughter is born for the son-in-law, son is born for the daughter-in-law.
English Meaning
This proverb reflects the reality that once children grow up and get married, they often become more devoted to their spouses (son-in-law for the daughter, daughter-in-law for the son) and their new families. Parents might feel a sense of distance or that their children now 'belong' to someone else. It acknowledges the natural life cycle where children establish their own households and loyalties may shift.
English Proverb
A son is a son till he gets a wife; a daughter's a daughter all her life. (Note: While commonly cited, this English proverb doesn't perfectly capture the Nepali meaning, as the Nepali proverb implies *both* children shift allegiance, whereas the English one suggests the daughter remains closer.)
